Before movies and TV, Chautauqua reigned!

A Chautauqua auditorium graces Manners Park, just four blocks south of the Taylorville Square.

Noted for its umbrella-style canopy, the open air structure listed on the
National Register of Historic Places opened on Aug. 23, 1914.

Chautauqua assemblies were educational and cultural retreats in the early part of the 20th Century. Theodore Roosevelt called the Chautauqua movement “the most American thing in America.” Families camped for days in tents on the grounds to attend educational and entertainment programs. The building now is a site for picnics and special events. Taylorville Park District, 217-824-3110. www.taylorvilleparkdistrict.com

Mind Your Manners!
A brick archway welcomes visitors to 62-acre Manners Park, the largest within the Taylorville Park District. Roadways meandering through the leafy, rolling terrain attract joggers and walkers (and furry companions).

An outdoor Olympic-size swimming pool; community building; picnic pavilion and tables; playgrounds; baseball fields; basketball and tennis courts, ADA restrooms, horseshoe pits; a seven-acre lake with fishing dock and waterfowl, and the annual Christmas in the Park outdoor light display make this a family destination for all seasons. Class and family reunions often meet here. Don’t miss the march of the ducks! 217-824-3110.

Jaynes Park
Baseball fields, tennis courts, picnic tables and a castle-style playground provide an 11.4 acre haven on Taylorville’s west end. Off Vandeveer Street, the adjacent Don Bragg Athletic Complex features softball fields, youth football/soccer field and – ready, set go! – a popular paved walking trail. 217-824-3110.

Pay Your Respects to Kay
Kay, the matriarch of the Carson & Barnes Circus elephant herd, died in
Taylorville in 1994 in the middle of a tour at age 58. A urinary infection was the cause of death. For decades, Kay basked in the limelight, visiting the small towns of America.

Local veterinarian Jerry Breuel, who had attended Kay in her last hours, volunteered his farm as a burial site. A granite headstone there pays tribute to the beloved elephant. Clearly visible, the marker is on the southbound side of the Nokomis blacktop, just a mile from IL 48.
